The AccommodationsThe accommodations throughout this trip are very nice and everywhere the food is excellent. Marks operations are known for their comfort and service as well as their own unique flavor but all of them will make an impression that will last a lifetime, you will not be roughing it! You will eat a fair amount of African game as well as steaks, chicken, fresh vegetables and salads and all meals will be accompanied with fine South African wines. The HuntMark Haldane is without a doubt the number one outfitter for bird hunting in South Africa as wingshooting is Mark’s passion. This is a mixed Bag shoot sampling some of the best that South Africa has to offer. The trip will start with a good volume of sporty rock pigeons and doves in Bloemfontein, Then we will fly to Durban where we will hunt Spurwing and Egyptian geese out of field pit blinds as well as red eyed doves and maybe some spurfowl in the afternoons. The Spurwing goose is the largest goose in the world. They average around 18 pounds and are a true trophy. From there we will travel north to Dundee where we will be hunting a mixed bag of francolin, guinea fowl, ducks, dove and pigeons. The ducks will be shot over decoys in one of the many potholes or lagoons that Mark has scouted and set up. Here we will also shoot a mixed bag of upland birds in francolin, guineafowl, spur fowl, dove and pigeons. The francolin and spur fowl will be hunting behind Marks excellent English pointers thus this hunt will require some walking. The guinea fowl at a real treat and exciting to shoot as they fly all at once and usually they will fly the same way so a lot of planning goes into the drive. When Wingshooting In Africa You Will Need:The weather during this time of year is winter in Southern Africa. Normally low temperatures in the 30’s and highs in the 50-60’s. It is generally a dry time, but be prepared for some rain. You will need hunting boots that will allow you to do some walking for Francolin, guinea fowl, dove and pigeons. We have dry blinds except in the case of rain so there is really no need for rubber boots, waders and hip boots. Camouflage is recommended for the ducks and the geese. But no military camo, keep it more to the kahki rather than green. Bring some shooting glasses and ear protection. Gloves would be a good idea in the mornings. Dress is very casual during the trip. Marks staff will do laundry daily once back at Zuluwings. Our stays are too short at the other locations for laundry service. Southwind destinations will be glad to assist you with gun papers if you are wanting to bring your own gun and rental guns are also available. 12 and 20 gauge shells are the only shells available in South Africa. The cost of the shells is $13 for low brass and $14 for high brass and all 20g per box of 25 . You cannot bring your own shotgun shells into either country. Mark will have plenty of shells on hand in both 12 and 20 gauge. At the end of the trip you will pay Mark for the shells you shot. Cash or travelers checks are preferred but personal checks are accepted. In closing you can expect a well run, organized trip, with lots of friendly people and a great experience. Mark Haldane and his staff run a first class operation. This trip is not about the quantity of the shooting but the quality of the shooting for all species. There are very few if any place in the world where you can get this variety of shooting. |
