SouthWind Destinations: Nicaragua

The Locale

Nicaragua is in the midst of a revitalization and reinvention, turning it into one of the premier hunting destinations in the world. The department of Chinandega located on the north western part of the country is characterized by spectacular scenery, beautiful beaches, and a multitude of relatively unexplored attractions. The department features Nicaragua’s highest active volcano, the San Cristóbal, among several other magnificent volcanoes. Pristine marshes and estuaries filled with mangrove forest create a perfect habitat for migrating Blue winged teal, shovler’s, gadwall, fulvous tree ducks as well several other species. The limits are very liberal and the shooting is outstanding as nowhere else in the world can you shoot ducks with a puffing volcano as a back drop.

The Accommodations

During your hunt in Nicaragua, you'll stay in the town of Chinandega--located just south of the Honduras border. The hotel Posta del Sol is a relatively new, air-conditioned hotel allowing single room accommodations for each hunter. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Chinandega, away from the noises of town but still close enough for shopping during mid day right in the middle of the hunting areas. The hotel features a swimming pool and private dining area, where meals are specially prepared for the groups and include soups, seafood, chicken and steaks prepared with a special Nicaraguan flair. The hotel also has Wi-Fi and a separate bar area where you can sample some of the famous Flor de Caña rum. If you're coming from one of the northern states, you might want to sit outside and enjoy the warm tropical weather. The hunting season is during the colder months, from November through February.

The Hunt

Duck hunting in Nicaragua is inimitable, as this is one of the largest wintering areas for the blue winged teal. Nowhere else can you hunt ducks in extremely good numbers wearing shorts, as a confortable breeze blows. you'll enjoy a puffing volcano as a back drop. The trip originates just three hours form the States in Managua, Nicaragua, where outfitters will meet the group and assist you through customs and gun registration. Then, you'll be driven about two hours north to Chinandega. The rest of this day is free to relax, get acclimated to the perfect weather and get your gear ready for the following morning's hunt. Normally, our trips are for three full days of hunting. You'll shoot four half-days at ducks and two half-days at white wings and mornings doves. The mornings come early as you drive about 45 minutes to the Lagoon, cross a tidal canal in a boat and then board a 12-person airboat for your ride into the marsh. The dove hunting is similar to Mexico, where you will normally fire from four to 20 boxes per half-day. If you have never shot white wings, they are some of the sportiest and challenging doves in the world . Please call or email us for more details.
